The Willow Project
This project is an irreversible carbon bomb. The Biden Administration approved The Willow Project, which is an $8 billion oil drilling plan created by ConocoPhillips. It is based on the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, which was originally preserved in case of a Naval emergency. Once it is up and running, it will release 9.2 million metric tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere each year, which is roughly equivalent to the pollution generated by 2 million gas powered cars. ConocoPhillips and The Biden Administration was ignorant and failed to acknowledge that by going through with this project they were putting endangered species like polar bears and caribou up north in danger by allowing the earth to continuously rise in temperature. The project would affect the entire world, not just the United States of America. So my question is, "Would the approval of this project not only cause many environmental/climate problems but also cause conflict between other countries and/or Americas allies?". Without a proper international review, the US government is not within its right to impose a potentially very lethal project upon the rest of the world without expecting repercussions from international communities. Joe Biden had made a promise at a campaign stop in New Hampshire saying, "No more oil drilling on federal lands, period, period, period", in February of 2020 (he repeated this twice). This hypocrisy acts as a betrayal by a former president who won peoples support by saying he was going to end oil drilling on Federal Land. The Willow Project will not be complete until 30 years from now, meaning that it will be your children who have to live with the results of this horrible project. After 30 years, this project will have released 276 million metric tons, equivalent to over 600m billion lbs, of carbon pollution into our atmosphere. It is an irreversible Carbon Bomb. The human race has less than 12 years to fix climate change until it becomes unfixable. We are in a critical danger and have limited time to fix it. There were many petitions and over 5.2 million signatures to stop The Willow Project. In the National Security Strategy there is a section titled Climate and Energy Security, on lines 3-5 it says, "without immediate Global action to reduce emissions, scientists tell us we will soon exceed 1.5° of warming, locking in further extreme heat and weather, rising sea levels, and catastrophic biodiversity loss". There are many other parts that tell us how the government will help to protect us and help the environment. In this day and age, we need smart people who can use their resources to fix problems sustainably instead of trying to fix one problem while creating another one that could be detrimental to nature's way of living.
